Rector’s Ramblings, December 2010

A parishioner recently said something which really resonated with me…something about the meaning of Christmas being not just what we learn in the church, but what we know as educated people (you know, the understanding that major world religions and their primary tenets/holy days are related to world history). Yet, I wonder how many people can accurately articulate, with some detail, the meaning of Christmas, a major holy day in all of Christendom. How many people really know the sacred story of the Nativity, the essence of Christmas?

The story of a baby’s birth, especially the birth of Jesus, is a story for all ages. Holy Trinity is one of few churches where our children tell the story on Christmas Eve: many other churches now do the same during Advent. Here, on Christmas Eve, we gather to witness our children as the angel Gabriel and Mary in the Annunciation, as Joseph and Mary seeking a place to stay in Bethlehem, as shepherds and angels and Wisemen (bringing Epiphany into the picture). Our older youth serve as the lectors, reading the Story, as our youngest cherubs enact it…the rest of us adding our voices through singing of carols.

This is a vital experience for all of us, God’s children young and old. By acting out the sacred drama, the youngest among us begin to learn the meaning of Christmas. One year as an angel, another as a shepherd. Then Gabriel, Joseph or Mary, or even a wise guy! Each year the story becomes more and more a part of us, whether a character in the drama, a lector, or a person singing in the pew. Each year, together we marvel at the meaning of Christmas: Emmanuel – God with us – first in the form of a vulnerable infant.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me for ever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.*

I hope you will bring your children on December 5, 12 and 19 (after the 10:30 service) to be cast in the nativity story and to rehearse. Encourage them to invite their friends so that they will learn the story too. Last but not least, since Holy Trinity may be the only church around with children acting out the story on Christmas Eve, invite others to come and see. The service is forty-five minutes or less, a joyful offering for children of all ages.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel,

Karen+

*Name that tune!
