  • Relay for Life: Just a few weeks ago, we announced the formation of the Holy T-Birds Relay for Life team. In typical Holy Trinity style the parish responded with enthusiasm and offers to help. Parishioners responded, “How can we help?” “What can I do?” Many donated generously to the American Cancer Society; as of 3:00 am Sunday, June 27, our team had raised $2,210. You also responded by coming to walk; at least 48 parishioners and friends walked the Relay track at some time. Holy Trinity had someone on the track during each hour of the Relay—from 1:00 pm Saturday to 9:00 am Sunday.
As one of the team members said, “Isn’t it wonderful how a simple request generates such an outpouring of involvement among our fellow parishioners.”Many thanks for your support. And if you didn’t have a chance to make a contribution, you can still do that; Mary Melvin or Bonnie Mason will be happy to accept your donation.

Rector’s Ramblings, July 2010

I am going to “ramble” about how I hope you will do as I say and not as I usually do.  As I ramble, early in June, I am anticipating a trip to Greece with my husband Bob and son Will. Will graduates from Ohio State on June 13: this trip is his graduation present.

Greece! I am so excited! Corinth, where Paul shared the Good News.  Byzantine churches and monasteries. Museums filled with art and artifacts from a foundation of Western civilization. Delphi, Mycenae, Olympia, Crete, Santorini – land, mountains, and islands, of sacred oracles and pirates, foreign invasions and miracles. Yet, I am eagerly anticipating something about this trip much more: two weeks with my family. We haven’t spent two weeks together for more than four years.  That’s what happens when your curious kid grows up, goes to college, and chooses work sites like New Hampshire and California, all blessings, I admit. Yet please, do as I say. Spend more time with your family and friends. Talk together. Sit down at a table and share a meal with no electronic intrusions (and if this is difficult, keep practicing!). Better yet, prepare the meal together, too. Walk together. Weave your communal stories and make music together. Laugh. Cry. Play.

Share this extraordinary gift of life … unhurried, undistracted … together.

Do not wait. Time beckons, as do your family and friends.

Every blessing until I see you July 4th!

GREEN SCREEN
Thursday, June 24, 2010 | 7:00 pm
NICOTINE BEES
All over the world, at the same time, with the same bizarre behaviors bees simply leave their precious honey and young behind. They don’t come home. This movie gets to the truth about why the honey bees of the world are in big trouble, and why our food supply is in trouble with them. Filmed on 3 continents to find out the reason bees are in catastrophic decline – and why many people don’t want the real story to be told. With the continuing bee collapse one third of our food supply is at risk – despite the clear-cut scientific data news reports continue to call the phenomenon “mysterious.” We think this crisis is not mysterious. Nicotine Bees is ready to show what has happened. 53 min.

A free environmental film from the Oxford I.C.C.W.G. Green Screen presents films about the science, art, politics and spirituality of the natural environment. Presented FREE at 7:00 pm at the Oxford Community Arts Center.

Independence Day Hymns
After the 10:30 service on July 4th, we will raise our voices in song in honor of Independence Day. Join us as we give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in our country by singing a few “national” hymns.

Piano Performance at HT
Dear Holy Trinity Friends,

On Sunday June 27 my dear friend Paula Seger will join me in performing a short program of music four hands, one piano. The recital begins at 4:00 and will probably be over about 5:00  This combination is somewhat unusual, four hands two pianos being more often heard. We will perform works by Beethoven, Schubert, Barber and Moszkowsky.

Paula is a local piano teacher, graduate of UCCM, and has possibly taught some of your children.

Preparing the music has been a real joy and we look forward to sharing it with friends.

Help Children Become Better Readers
The Diocese of Southern Ohio is sponsoring a Reading Camp for 3-4th graders from June 20-25, 2010. The goal of Reading Camp is to help children who are reluctant and struggling readers to improve literacy skills, encourage them to become more confident students and begin their life-long love of reading. The camp staff includes reading specialists, educators, camp counselors, and volunteers.

It is our hope that by the end of the week, the children have gained confidence in their reading skills because of the enjoyment and success that they have experienced at camp.

There is no cost for the camp for students. Tuition is provided by generous donations by parishioners of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio as well as by grants from corporations and foundations.

We need your help in sponsoring reluctant readers. The cost for a student to participate in the 5-day residential camp is $350. This includes Procter Summer Camp housing, varied activities including creating a play to be performed at the closing, a backpack and t-shirt, and several books to take home. More importantly, they will leave a more enthused and avid reader.

Contributions of any amount maybe mailed to 412 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Please indicate ‘Reading Camp’ in the memo line.

Our children are our future and we can all make a major contribution to their success.

Additional info can be obtained from Rev Diana Shirley (614) 882-9038 or dianashirley@columbus.rr.com

Relay for Life
Holy Trinity has recently adopted a new challenge—Holy Trinity Relay for Life. The American Cancer Society sponsors Relay for Life to help raise funds and awareness, to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to remember loved ones lost, and to fight back against the disease. This year’s Relay for Life will be an all-night event in front of Millett Hall; it begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 26 and ends at 9:00 a.m., Sunday, June 27. Each team is encouraged to keep at least one walker on the walkway throughout the 21-hour event.

Many ways exist to support this new adventure:

  • Sign up to walk during the Oxford Relay For Life – large sign-up sheets are in the Bishop’s Foyer and the Undercroft
  • Donate to the Holy Trinity Relay for Life team—online, in person or during the special Relay collection on June 20
  • Staff our booth at Millett; help cook and sell brats and metts from 5:00 – 7:00
  • Attend the Relay for Life as cheerleader or head coach!

We appreciate the love and caring that is consistently shown by our church community, and we look forward to your support for the 2010 Holy Trinity Relay for Life team.

Please stay tuned for more information.  You can learn more about Holy Trinity Relay for Life at www.relayforlife.org/oxford or at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=23614&pg=entry.

If you prefer print information rather than web-based information, contact Mary Melvin or Bonnie Mason.
